Dr. Sudev Sheth is a Senior Lecturer at The Lauder Institute where he teaches perspectives on entrepreneurship, leadership, global capitalism, and urban studies. He also holds an appointment as faculty in the Department of History at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the social and cultural history of South Asia, business history, and family enterprise in societies past and present. Prior to Penn, Dr. Sheth was the Harvard-Newcomen Fellow in Business History at Harvard Business School where he taught in the MBA and doctoral programs.
Dr. Sheth’s latest book, Bankrolling Empire: Family Fortunes and Political Transformation in Mughal India, explores how a prominent family business from seventeenth-century India navigated political uncertainty across generations to expand their entrepreneurship and shape state power into modern times. The family featured in the book is now in their fifteenth generation, recognized as one Asia’s largest manufacturers of textiles and fast fashion today.

I met Sarahang sahab in 1972. He used come and spend the winters in India and used ho stay in a hotel in South Extension, Delhi, where I too lived at that time. I also met his son Eltaf at that time. Then about a decade later Biswajit Roy Chowdhury went to play sarod in Kabul and I accompanied him. We met Eltaf there again. Later when trouble in Afghanistan worsened Eltaf shifted to Delhi with his family and lived there for years before migrating to Canada. 💗 I consider Ustad Sarahang to be a GREAT Vocalist of Patiala gharana. He was trained by Ashiq Ali Khan in Lahore.

He makes me cry and makes me want to weep every time I listen to him. My late father used to listen to him for decades and that made us listen to our Precious Ustad M. H. Sarahang in turn, I fell in love with his voice, his ghazals and his style of singing Ghazals when I was no more than 12 and I’m 33 now. Thank you Dad. I hope you’re having a great time in heaven with Ustad Sarahang. 😢😢 There will be never anyone like USTAD M. H. SARAHANG AND MY DAD. You both were a blessing on me. 😭

Here are my edited comments. The documentary mentioned in the interview was for different purpose and interview had different purpose. I apologize for mixing the two. However, I wish to mention that Munni Begum played an outstanding role in shaping the personality of Ustadji. Behind every successful man there is a woman and that was Munni Begum. She had a difficult time at the end for which my sympathies to her. Gurbir Singh

No, here Khansahib is talking about Rosetta Renshaw, a researcher on Indian Classical Music, not about Raisa Begum (Khansahib's 3rd and last wife). Also the son Amir Khansahib is talking about is Ikram Ahmed - his eldest son with his first wife Munni Begum - who migrated to Canada in the 1960s and was probably helped by Ms Renshaw.

Thanks Pulak Gupta for the reply. My comments were dependent on the documentary mostly. Son shown in the documentary was Shahbaz Khan whereas I was presuming to be Ikram . The confusion arises when the documentary was made in 1970 and biography depicted was of the time around 1955 when Khan Saheb used to go to India Hotel and getting water while sitting in the train. This was the reason I misunderstood the role of Munni Bai and Raisa Begum. Thanks again for helping me remove the confusion --Gurbir Singh

The write up is excellently analysed. I do not think any other could do it better. I have not read any of these books. So, my reaction may be quite immature. I feel that this accident/incident is a fraction of a leadership issue. Yet the circumstances were extraordinary and occur only once or twice in history. And this makes the author’s views extremely important. Some comments will endorse the views presented. There will be others who will criticise them. In my opinion, leadership is the capability to fathom adversities, adjust to these adversities, and have will power to face these adversities. Despite knowing that there is no way out, the essence is motivating others to come out of adversities. I also do not rule out the views of Golding. I think both views are correct. In this case, the survival of the team members depended on taking everyone along. A life lost meant the weakening of the group. This is why they did their best to adjust with others. On the contrary, it is anarchy when the people think that they can gain by suppressing or eliminating others. You also mentioned that rituals overcame social imbalance and maintain cohesion. This was probably because they all belonged to a community that believed in same/similar rituals. Of course, there are rituals that go beyond cultural or religious boundaries across the world, especially in new and adverse circumstances.
